The Potmarge area is also an ecological environment suitable to agriculture, and the Hoftuinen is a neighbourhood cooperative of the Achter de Hoven district in Leeuwarden that is made up of volunteers, to make the area a little greener.
Along the Potmarge, apple trees have been planted in various places. Some of these trees date from the time when the area still had many vegetable gardens. Additionally, there is a path with 12 apple trees, that was planted in 2016, on the grounds of the Water Campus which is named Marijke Meu (after the princess). The Hoftuinen cooperation manages these apple trees in collaboration with the municipality of Leeuwarden.
Community building and agricultural activities are often organised so that people can experience the whole process from planting to harvesting and, at the same time, have fun.
